Woods Cop Mysteries
Ice Hunter

Ice Hunter

What if diamonds were found in the wilds of the Upper Peninsula? Would craze, greedy people descend on the area with picks and shovels and dreams of getting rich? Would scam artists be with them? Talk about a headache for a conservation officer who treasures silence and solitude.

Blue Wolf in Green Fire

Blue Wolf in Green Fire

Wolves were pretty much extirpated from Michigan early in the 20th century. But they began coming back on their own in the late 1980s. Lots of people are pleased they have returned. As many are not pleased at all. And there are some who see it as a way to make a little fast cash. A blue wolf is a genetically rare creature, which means some jerk will want to kill it.

Chasing a Blond Moon

Chasing a Blond Moon

The international illegal animal parts business is second only to illegal drugs in size, but may exceed it in terms of damage to the planet. The unscrupulous trade for bear gall bladders and paws is global and extends into Michigan where there is an estimated population of 19,000 black bears.

Running Dark

Running Dark

For years the Michigan Department of Natural Resources engaged in a rough and tumble contest with fish poachers operating from the Garden Peninsula in Delta County. Equipment got smashed, people got hurt, and it nearly turned into lethal shooting war. Grady Service, a new CO, was right in the thick of it. Lansing had it’s own agenda back then and officers were left on their own and to their own devices to deal with the trouble.

Strike Dog

Strike Dog

What if a serial killer had visions of grandeur, wanted to show the world that he alone was perfect and could get away with it? And what if he had been killing game wardens around the United States for years and nobody had picked up on what was going on. One thing’s for sure, if such a person targeted Grady Service, he’d have his hands full.

Death Roe

Death Roe

Michigan is rich in natural resources, which means there are all sorts of people trying to figure a way to make a buck from what’s out there – legally or otherwise. When Grady Service pinches a Ukrainian immigrant illegally selling salmon eggs, the case will lead him into territory he never imagined and make him a target not just of the bad guys he’s chasing but the target of many of his own DNR colleagues.

The sixth woods cop mystery, Death Roe will be published by Lyons Press, October 2008 --  just in time for the holidays.
